Virtual Roundtable: Data Sharing in SBER: What Works Now and What Can Work Better?

When:  Oct 16, 2025 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM (ET)

In this roundtable, leaders from an SBER-focused IRB and an SBER-serving data repository will lead a discussion about the intersection between the SBER research community's expectations for data sharing in "the name of greater research transparency" and the existing requirements and guidelines for human research protections. Since this topic has been of relevance for over a decade, a special effort will be made to highlight some of the most recent conceptual and technological developments in this dynamic aspect of doing contemporary SBER research. The session will begin with a didactic portion where the presenters will give an overview of ways in which IRBs can and should be dealing with data sharing issues, as well as the role of data repositories as appropriate venues of SBER data sharing. The rest of the session will be dedicated to a discussion with attendees guided by the presenters regarding the key challenges IRBs are facing in their daily work regarding data sharing by SBER researchers, including solutions with established procedures and recommendations. The last part of the session will allow for Q&A from the attendees to the presenters.
